One dead, six injured in Mississippi restaurant shooting

Must read

A gunman was arrested Friday at a Mississippi restaurant that left one person dead and six others injured, according to local police.

The Ocean Springs Police Department said officers were dispatched shortly before 11 p.m. The shoot is Friday at Scratch Kitchen & Bar downtown.

The city of Ocean Springs said in a statement Saturday that police have taken the suspect into custody. Police Chief Mark Dunstan said in a statement that the suspect’s identity would not be released pending the investigation.

“Detectives are continuing the interviews and do not want the details to spoil future information,” he said.

Police previously identified the man killed in the shooting as 19-year-old Chase Harmon, a resident of Moss Point, Mississippi. He said that the injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

In a statement Saturday, Mayor Kenny Holloway described the shooting as “intentional” and said it caused “terrible disruption” to the Ocean Springs community.

“Indiscriminate acts of violence have rocked our small town with a complete disregard for the safety of others not only in our downtown area but throughout our city. It was not an accidental act of violence, it was a deliberate attack.

Holloway said officers would “exhaust all resources” to keep the roads safe for everyone.

There was a large crowd in downtown Ocean Springs on Friday night for Cinco de Mayo celebrations, and Scratch Kitchen & Bar is located along a busy line of restaurants and bars.

Ocean Springs is located in southern Mississippi, about 90 miles from New Orleans.
